Why Are There So Many Antihistamines? 🤧💊
Antihistamine drugs are everywhere! While you’re used to the anti-allergy effects of commercially successful drugs like Benadryl and Claritin, popular drugs for motion sickness, peptic ulcers, and even antipsychotics started their lives as antihistamines. It also turns out that important concepts in pharmacology, like the receptor theory, and agonist and antagonist pharmacology, owe their development in part to the story of antihistamines.

Streptomycin: The Controversy over the First Tuberculosis Antibiotic (Schatz vs Waksman)
Просмотров 51 тыс.5 месяцев назад
Streptomycin was the first effective antibiotic against tuberculosis. But it’s discovery was controversial. The credit was awarded mostly to Selman Waksman, but his graduate student, Albert Schatz, had a legitimate claim to the title. In this video, you’ll learn why penicillin doesn’t work on tuberculosis, the discovery story of streptomycin, the pharmacology of aminoglycoside antibiotics, and ...
Penicillin: From Fleming to the Pharmacy

Sulfa Drugs: the Rise and Fall of Sulfanilamide
Просмотров 464 тыс.8 месяцев назад
Streptococcus bacteria have caused uncountable deaths from infection throughout history, and in 1935, humanity finally got a tool to fight them. Starting in 1932, Bayer and IG Farben started testing compounds for antibacterial properties. This culminated with Prontosil (sulfanilamide) in 1935, one of the first effective antibacterial drugs. It was uniquely poised to take advantage of streptococ...
What Was The First Antibiotic?

What was the first antibiotic discovered? While Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin gets the most hype (and a Nobel Prize) there’s evidence that humans throughout ancient history fought infections with remedies like mold, honey, beer, and some interesting home recipes. Then in the 19th century, Emmerich and Low came up with pyocyanase, what has the best claim to the title of first antib...

Now figure out why people become allergic to antibiotics later in life that were given to them in childhood. My Dad is allergic to sulfa drugs. I'm allergic to penicillin. I was given many shots of penicillin. After living through several viruses and bacterial infections into my teens, I haven't been sick much since at age 56. My reaction to penicillin came about 20 years after the last use in childhood when I had an abcess tooth. I broke out in hives.

About a yr and a half ago, for some reason I took Benadryl steadily before bedtime, sort of like a sleeping pill. I needed something to help me sleep as I slowly adjusted to my night shift, and I've been taking cetirizine for yrs since it was prescribed to me as maintenance for my allergic rhinitis, so antihistamines aren't new to me. The auditory hallucinations were insane--it felt like constant whispering near my ears to the point that I thought my room was haunted lol (it wasn't, because the hallucinations went away once I stopped taking the medication). The night terrors were awful too--I'm already prone to nightmares as it as, but the night terrors and sleep paralysis occurred frequently about 2-3x a week. It went on for about 5 months before I switched to melatonin.

This is so interesting! I remember when I was a child, I had ... three or four appendix inflammations. That was in the late 80s, early 90s. Non of them was deemed severe enough to warrant a removal. The way this decision was made was having my temperature measured in my mouth and in my butt. Had there been a difference of more than 1°C, I wouldn't still have my appendix today. And ever since it turned out that appendixes are pretty useful, I am happy that it's still here with me. <3

I was born at home in 1944 and never had a stay in a hospital or for that matter, I never get sick enough to see a doctor. I have a complete immune system which includes foreskin, tonsils, appendix, spleen and a few other organs and systems which I forget. I explained this to the last doctor I saw back in 2019 and without missing a beat, he recommended that I take the experimental covid19 vaccine and said it was absolutely safe. I ignored him as I do most doctors and of course, I never got sick. Nothing like walking around with an intact immune system.

I wonder how a brainless virus can have such a clever strategy. Darvins theory doesn't work here. Almost looks like if someone designed, engineered the viruses and other diseases. Like those which cause you to cough in order to spread itself. Really strange!

I had mine out in 1993, laproscopic. Surgery began as exploratory because my white cell counts were normal, and ultrasound showed my appendix as normal size. In surgery, it was gangrene and ruptured during removal. Turns out, my organs were smaller than "normal". And my immune system is bunko, although it got amazingly better after my tonsilectomy the next year. Which is why when you read the lines comparing tge appendix to the tonsils, it made me laugh.

After that I suffered extreme IBS for years, explosive diarrhea. Gradually it has became better and better. Still been hell to live with.

I had appendicitis and needed emergency surgery. Took the doctor forever to figure out my appendix was at the 2 o’clock position on my large intestine, instead of the 7 o’clock when looking at me. It was also on the backside towards my kidney so I was originally diagnosed with kidney stones. 4 painful hours later and I was under the knife after a CAT scan figured it out.

I had my appendix removed in 1947 and was one of the first patients in Central Florida to be treated with penicillin plus the usual sulfa drug. I was told years later that my appendix ruptured as it was being removed. I remember when the thick, light brown decayed matter oozed from my wound. The smell of putrescine or cadaverine, the chemicals from rotting bodies that give that distinctive smell of death. Perhaps that inspired me to get a degree in chemistry years later. Oh, my mother, born in 1915 also had her appendix removed. Ether was used to make me unconscious. And my recovery took a week in the hospital.

CTs are useless for the diagnosis of appendicitis. They mislead more often than they help. When CT first became available, surgeons would request a CT to delay the case until the morning.
